January 2009
Here we are ready to start new semester. We have lots of work to do and we’ll be very busy.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
We will continue reading a story a week. We will do various comprehension exercises during the week. The students will receive the spelling words on Monday and we will take a test on Friday. Please study the words at home during the week. In grammar we will be doing more writing. We will start a daily journal of writing in the classroom. We will start cursive writing. The students think they can start writing in cursive, but it will take us the rest of the year to get through the letters. The students will take another Dibels test and continue to work on their reading counts. We will have a half hour a day for independent reading work that they will do in groups of three or four.
MATH:
We are getting back into the math facts. Please study these at home as it slows the students up if they don’t know the facts to 18. We will begin doing double digit addition and subtraction. We will learn regrouping for both addition and subtraction. Depending on how fast the students grasp this, we will begin studying money.
RELIGION:
We will spend the month of January doing our Genesis book. A letter will be sent home explaining this before we begin. The students will have a project as part of this and it will be due the end of January. Each class at St. Jude participates in Genesis and each year they do something different. I know the first graders do a family tree. In second grade we do a candle. A note explaining this will also go home the first week of January. We will conclude the month with Catholic Schools Week.
SCIENCE:
We will finish up studying animals with vertebrates. We will study the solar system next. We have a science fair coming up and I hope the students will choose a simple science experiment to do for the science fair. I’m not sure of the date, but will send home more information later.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
The month of January will be spent studying Kansas. We will learn various things about the state and make a booklet. Kansas day is January 29th.
Some important dates this month:
